There were a number of Cretan Jews who distinguished themselves as rabbis, community leaders, scholars and intellectuals during the Venetian period in Crete. Individuals such as Shemariah ben Elijah Ikriti, Elias ben Moise Delmedigo and Elijah Capsali, among others, studied in Italy, and in other Jewish communities with strong Italian influences including Corfu, Zakynthos and Livorgno.
