Every year, a memorial service (hashkabah) for the members of the Cretan Jewish community who perished in the Shoa is held at Etz Hayyim Synagogue. The service is usually led by Rabbi Gabriel Negrin of Athens and attended by the Havurah of Etz Hayyim, as well as numerous guests and representatives of the municipality of Hania. During the memorial service, the names of the victims are read and a candle for each individual is lit.
